4 Tips To Help You Get The Most From An Acupuncture Session

Posted on

Acupuncture has been used to treat a wide range of ailments ranging from migraines to back pain. By making smart decisions prior to and after an acupuncture session, you can get the most benefit from it. If you have an upcoming session scheduled, here are some things you can do in preparation and afterwards.

Know Your Symptoms

Acupuncture is based on the principle that each part of your body is connected to pressure points that control pain. In order for it to be effective, the acupuncturist needs to know specifically which pressure points to target during your session.

Before your appointment, write down every symptom you are experiencing. Even if you are primarily going to the acupuncturist because you are having back pain, include any other symptoms you are having. You might be able to get relief from those also. For instance, if you also have migraines, studies have shown that acupuncture can help alleviate the symptoms.

Eat Before Your Appointment

If you fail to eat prior to an appointment, you could experience dizziness or fatigue after acupuncture is over. Ideally, you should eat at least a couple of hours before your session.

By timing your meal before the session, you can avoid feeling distracted by hunger pains and also avoid the dizzying aftereffects of having not eaten. As you become accustomed to the sessions, you can adjust the amount of time before the session that you eat to what you feel is most comfortable.

Stick to Water After the Session

Alcohol, carbonated drinks, fruit juice, and other sweetened drinks contain processed sugars that could work against your acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture is about achieving balance throughout your body. When you consume sweetened drinks after the session, you can cause an imbalance.

After the session, stick to drinking water for the first full day. The water allows your body time to recover from the session and helps to ensure you get the most out of therapy.

Relax After Treatment

One of the biggest mistakes you can make following an acupuncture session is to fall right back into your routine. Acupuncture works to relax your body. By not stopping to relax after the treatment, you can interrupt your body's attempt to become more balanced.

Taking the rest of the day to relax gives your body a chance to get accustomed to its new state and also allows you time to enjoy it. Contact a clinic like West Omaha Chiropractic & Sports Injury Clinic to learn more.
